Welcome to our family vacation spot on Sylvan Lake! If you are looking for lakefront relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of city life, consider our tri-level home on Pit Basin with a view of the open space at Boy Scout Island. My sister and I bought this house 3 years ago as a place to gather friends and family while sharing fun at the lake. Our family of 12 loves it, and we hope you will also find it a great place to create memories. Sunrise is amazing from this location! Our motto is "Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset, Repeat".
Sylvan lake is a 669 acre "all-sport" lake, located in Rome City, Indiana. Sylvan lake has 5 basins and several small islands. It is a shallow lake with an average depth of 10 feet, max depth of 33 feet. We have a sandy area for swimming to the right of the dock, although there are rocks too so water shoes are recommended. There are other sandy areas (accessed by boat) the locals use for swimming. If you bring your own boat or rent one, there is no fuel dock on the water, but there is a public boat launch in Rome City. Sylvan lake is not the largest lake in the area, but it is also less busy than many others making it a great place to fish, waterski, swim, go tubing etc. during the summer months. Rome City is a small friendly town surrounded by Indiana farmland. It does have a grocery, library, gas, liquor, ice cream shop & Sylvan Cellars. If a bigger city is needed: Kendallville is just 11 minutes away, Auburn 32 minutes, or Fort Wayne is 50 minutes. We are located very near the 3rd largest Amish community in the U.S.
The original part of the house was built in 1930 so there are a few quirks. It is not wheelchair accessible as it is a tri-level without bedrooms on the main floor. On the main floor is the kitchen, living, dining, laundry & full bathroom. Go up for the master bedroom & bath. Go down a few stairs for the other 2 bedrooms which are partially underground but they do have windows. Then go back up to the main level towards the back of the house for our "bonus" room and 1/2 bath. The bonus room does have a small living room space with TV or it can be used as additional sleeping space as the couch will convert to a bed & become a semi-private space with the 1/2 bath. The bonus room area will not be usable space in the winter as this is where our outdoor furniture is stored. There is an unfinished basement that can be used in the case of storms (tornado).
Please note that houses on the lake are very close together, in fact we share a drive with our neighbors on the right. We have very little yard as the majority of the lot is taken by the lake & the house. Please be aware that lake properties also have lots of bugs (spiders, bees, mosquitos, fireflies) as they like the lake too.
